Leo Carper diaries and papers, 1864 May 31-1865 April 1.

This collection includes two holograph, leather-bound diary volumes with entries dated June 30, 1864 to December 31, 1864, January 19, 1865 to April 1, 1865, and December 30 to December 31, 1865. It also includes two maps showing the route of Sherman's route to the sea, a military pass issued to Carper for a visit to Washington, D.C. and eleven letters sent to Charles Perkins in Burlington, Iowa dated between May 31, 1864 and December 11, 1864. Carper's diaries and letters discuss army life, Civil War campaigns including Sherman's March, news from the battle fronts, camp sites, and the weather.

Leo Carper of Burlington, Iowa served during the Civil War as an Assistant Adjutant General, probably with the Military Division of the Mississippi. The Division was organized on October 16, 1863 to consist of the Departments of the Ohio, the Tennessee, and the Cumberland. Carper appears to have been stationed in Tennessee.
